“You see things; and you say 'Why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say 'Why not?’“
—George Bernard Shaw
We are at a moment where this question is more relevant than ever.
Our global community is experiencing a collective crisis where no one escapes. People are social distancing, confined in place, seeking refuge from an unseen foe and hoping, if the foe finds us, we have the help we need to recover. Our hearts are in anguish over concern for ourselves and others, those who we have never met and those who are dear to our hearts. As we stay in place, the economy is convulsing. Why? Because people are the economy. Our global GDP is upside down. Leaders around the world are shaken with no clear vision of what’s to come. Every crisis presents opportunity. It’s all in the way we frame it and learn from it.
Let’s take it to the horse. Just like the horse whose life is interwoven with the herd, nature and the planet, we too are interwoven with our human herd, nature and the planet. Our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being depend on the collective. We have been human doings in a state of perpetual stress for so long, we have forgotten our collective importance. This crisis has forced humanity to stop moving its emotional, stressed feet, similar to how an emotionally stressed horse moves its feet until abruptly stopped. The horse comes back into coherence, into being rapidly, while we humans stay in incoherence. We have abruptly returned to a human state of being-human being. In this global moment of social distancing and isolation, we have opportunity for self inquiry. How has this impacted you? What are you liking about just being? Do you notice any gifts in this moment? What are you disliking? What do you want to keep? What do you want to release? This is a time of reflection tapping into our awareness and noticing. This is an opportunity to dream, to choose again, reset. We have choice to reframe our incoherence, our stress (negative attitudes and emotions) to a state of coherence ( forgiveness, ease, gratitude, and compassion) as metaphorically modeled by the horse.
Next. Notice how this global shutdown is allowing the earth to regenerate. It’s a glimpse of what can be. The earth thrives without us, but we cannot thrive without the earth. We are at a turning point for humanity and the planet. We know the power of our collective force; do we want to continue down our current path, or “dream things that never were; and…say ‘Why not’’’?
